Jefferson Weekly Update 6/9

Hello Jefferson Families,

Welcome to the last full school week of the year! This one’s action-packed with events: our 4-5 Music Performance Tuesday evening, Field Day on Wednesday, Tell Me Who You Are & PTA Nacho Bar + Silent Auction on Thursday evening, and Jogathon this Friday.

Speaking of Jogathon: we’re just shy of $6,500 dollars in donations gathered so far. Please continue the great fundraising efforts to support our PTA, who provide so many fun events, school-resources, and more for our community!

Kudos to those students & families who participated in our Track Team’s All-City Meet last weekend at Mt. Tahoma & yesterday’s Sound to Narrows 2K run. Our Bruins had a great showing at both events and have so much to be proud of. Thank you, Mrs. Smeall & Ms. Brodahl, for orchestrating these programs!

Have a wonderful week,

Mrs. Perkins

Updates

Jogathon is almost here, with the event this Friday 6/14! Please be sure to have your Bruins wear their tie-dye shirts as well as comfortable clothes to walk, run, wheel or jog around the track on Friday. Each class heat will last about 30 minutes. If you'd like to experience all the fun celebrating our students’ hard work fundraising, there are still volunteer spots available. Feel free to sign up and the PTA will send you instructions early next week. The signup link is below.

We still have a ways to go to get to our $20K goal, but we've got a silent auction and cotton candy fundraiser happening during the Tell Me Who You Are night this Thursday from 5-7. We'll have Nacho's and a DJ, plus a table to make signs for Jogathon. So, come check it out and help us get closer to our goal. We are so thankful for all your hard work fundraising so far, keep it up Bruins!

This is such a fun-filled day, please consider volunteering so you can join in the fun!

Field Day: THIS WEDNESDAY!

Mrs. Smeall is preparing for Jefferson’s All-School Field Day from 1:30-3:00 on Wednesday, June 12th. We’re looking for volunteers to help with games and supervision. If you’re interested, please contact Mrs. Smeall at: ksmeall2@tacoma.k12.wa.us

Tell Me Who You Are & PTA Nacho Night + Fundraising Event THIS THURSDAY

We hope you can join us this Thursday, 6/13, to check out our student & staff “Tell Me Who You Are” art projects & enjoy a nacho bar dinner, thanks to our PTA!

Our students have created “Tell Me Who You Are” artwork, where they tell the story of what makes them unique, including elements such as life experiences, culture, family, traditions, and more! Artwork will be on display in the cafeteria and some students will share their projects, open mic style, as well.

Afterward, DJ Sam will be on site as all families are invited to partake in a nacho bar dinner and cotton candy fundraiser (proceeds will be contributed to Jogathon)! This event will be in lieu of “Dog Days.”

It should be a great night of fun and community building, as we get closer to the end of our school year!

5th Grade Drive-Thru Celebration

We’re continuing the tradition of celebrating our 5th graders’ promotion to Middle School with a fun Drive-Thru event on June 18th. Flyers were sent home with 5th grade students last week. We’re adding one element to the event this year & will be inviting 5th graders and their families into the cafeteria for cake, after the drive-thru is wrapped up. Details are listed on the flyer and will be sent home via robo-call & email as we get closer to the event!

Please note that decorating your car is welcome, but completely optional. Student pick up begins at 2:00 and families should arrive no later than 2:15 to prepare for the drivethru, which begins at 2:30.

School Start Time to Remain the Same Next Year

Though many bell schedules will shift in our school district for the next school year, our official school start and end times will remain the same (9:00-3:30). The changes to many school schedules is due to the need for a more efficient bus route system, which will reduce the number of routes and save about $1 million in transportation costs per year.

Yearbooks for All Students Week of 6/17

Yearbooks are in! The PTA ordered books for the whole school and every student will receive one, free of charge. They will be handed out the last week of school. If you want to provide a donation to help contribute to the cost of the yearbook, you can either go to this link: https://bit.ly/4bSMabu or pay in cash at the front office (suggested donation of $6/book). Thank you for a wonderful year! Go Bruins!

Lost & Found

Once again, our lost and found racks are completely full and overflowing with student items. Please encourage your child to take a look for any items they may be missing or you’re welcome to come in and take a peek yourself!

All remaining clothing will be donated after the last day of school

What to do with your child’s laptop over the summer

All students can keep their school-issued laptop at home over the summer. (Please note, families of kindergarten students who want to have their laptop over the summer need to fill out Student Laptop Checkout form with our school.)

Families of students in kindergarten through second grade have the option to store their child’s school laptop at their school over the summer. Contact our office if you want to do that.

If your child is changing schools within TPS, they will need to keep their laptop over the summer and take it with them to their new school (for example, fifth-graders moving to middle school).

Schooling Plans for 2024-25

If you haven’t already, please complete the survey below to indicate whether or not your child will be returning to Jefferson next school year. Families of 5th graders, no need to indicate that your child will be moving on to Middle school. This helps us account for student moves that we might not be aware of, when building class lists for next school year. Please call the office with any questions & thanks to those who’ve already completed this survey!
